Fred's Top Picks

My 'Top Picks' are those pubs that I think a visitor to LA should not miss.

Fred lives in Los Angeles. You can follow him on twitter as @fredwaltman or read his twitter feed below

Note that we regularly update what constitutes a top pick so places can be relegated from the list if their beer range dips or there are other significant changes.

LA's original craft beer bar. World renown for their "Office Burger." Limited seating so it can get crowded in the evenings, especially Friday and Saturday.

The original beer destination in Old Town Pasadena.

Naja's Place A Fred top pick  Beach/Harbor View On Beach Bike PathWiFi available Usually has LA brewed beers.

Venerable beach dive bar with extensive beer selection.

In addition to a great beer selection they have an outstanding range of Scotch. No food but nearby places will deliver. They also hold periodic "theme nights" for a particular brewery or region.

Honorable Mention

"Honorable Mentions" are those pubs that just miss being a top pick but a visitor should make an effort to visit.

Inside the Sheraton Four Points LAX hotel. Yes, this is a hotel bar, but not like any hotel bar you've been to before. In spring and summer there is a second, poolside bar with another 5 taps, dedicated to local beers.

Brewpub and taproom for the Firestone Walker brewery. Opening hours will be expanding in May.

Cavernous pub with a wide selection of beers. Many from their San Diego brewery plus lots of local beers. Weekdays during the day their coffee shop is open with 5 taps of Mikkeller San Diego beers.

Mohawk Bend  Fred's Honorable Mention Full menuWiFi available Usually has LA brewed beers.

Mostly Californian beers and a good selection of local beers.

Tasting room for the brewery. Formerly Federal Brewing.

Neighborhood place just off of downtown El Segundo. Only three or four of the taps have interesting beers but they rotate frequently and always something good. When you walk in the door it is like a time warp back to the 1950s. Cash only (though there is an ATM on site).

Tap/tasting room of the brewery. It is in an industrial park, around the corner from Monkish Brewing.

Tiny strip mall deli with great sandwiches and an impressive number of taps in a very small space.

Right on the Venice boardwalk with a great ocean view. Mostly West Coast beers with local breweries represented. Inside is small but this is LA, there is a heated patio. Taster flights available.
